Tree service for north Lakeland — pine country around Lake Gibson

North of I-4, around Lake Gibson and up US-98 toward Kathleen, the trees are slash pines on sand and lakefront oaks, and the calls are beetles, lightning and the new lots going in next door.

Slash pine with red-brown needles from bark beetle attack standing among green pines in Polk County

North Lakeland is the part of the city that grew after I-4 came through: the 1970s–90s subdivisions around Lake Gibson (483 acres, the big lake north of the interstate), Gibsonia along the old US-98 corridor, the neighborhoods off Daughtery Road and Socrum Loop, and the newer tracts filling in toward Kathleen and the Polk Parkway. The soil is sand, the native cover is pine flatwoods, and the trees are mostly slash pines — tall, shallow-rooted and the first thing to go in a drought, a lightning summer or when a new house goes in next door and the trencher cuts the roots. The lakefront lots on Gibson carry big oaks and cypress; the newer subdivisions have the queen palms and laurel oaks the landscapers put in twenty years ago, now at the age where both start failing.

So north Lakeland is pine work first: identifying the beetle-hit and lightning-struck pines before they fall, taking down the gray dead ones over the pool cages — often by crane on the smaller lots — and advising owners on which of their tall pines are a reasonable risk and which aren't. Then the lakefront oaks and cypress, the lethal-bronzing palms in the subdivisions, and the lot clearing that comes with being the growth edge of a county that grew 20 percent in five years. The I-4 corridor also takes the brunt of the afternoon thunderstorms that build over the Green Swamp to the north, and Polk's million-plus lightning strikes in 2025 landed heavily here.

Questions from North Lakeland homeowners

Why do the pines die after a neighbor builds?

Root damage. A slash pine's roots spread wide and shallow in sand, and a trencher for a new driveway or utility line cuts a third of them. The stressed pine draws Ips beetles within the season. If a new house is going in next to your pines, water them through the construction and watch for pitch tubes.

A pine was hit by lightning last summer and looks fine.

Watch it this year. A strike that spiraled the bark off is usually fatal within a year; a single narrow scar sometimes isn't. Pitch tubes or fading needles mean beetles found it. See the lightning guide.

What does it cost to take down a 70-foot pine by the pool?

Rigged in sections, $1,200–$2,000; by crane when there's no drop zone, $2,500–$5,000. Several pines on the same visit share the setup.

Do I need a permit to clear my new lot?

Under an acre and single-family outside a subdivision plan, no. Over an acre or in a planned development, yes — through the city or Polk County depending on where the line is. We check first.
