Dead pine and pine beetle removal in Lakeland

A slash pine with red needles is already dead and is feeding the beetles that'll kill the next one. A gray one is just a 70-foot hazard waiting for a storm. Either way, it comes down — the question is how fast.

Slash pine with red-brown needles from bark beetle attack standing among green pines in Polk County

Slash pine is the most common tree in Lakeland's urban forest and the one that fails most dramatically: tall, straight, shallow-rooted in sand, and the first thing a stressed landscape loses. The killers in Polk County are the pine bark beetles — Ips engraver beetles that attack the upper trunk and limbs of pines weakened by drought, lightning, root damage or construction, and black turpentine beetles that work the lower trunk. The southern pine beetle, the one that destroys whole forests in Georgia, doesn't occur south of Orlando, so a Lakeland outbreak is usually a few trees, not a stand. But a few trees can be the three pines over your pool cage.

The field rule is about needle color. Green needles with pitch tubes (little blobs of resin) on the bark and sawdust at the base: beetles are in it now, the tree is dying, and it should come down immediately before the beetles emerge and fly to the next pine. Red or brown needles: the tree is dead, the beetles are still inside or just leaving — remove now. Gray needles and bark falling off: the beetles are long gone and the tree is simply a dead pine, which is a different problem — the roots rot, the trunk dries and it falls, usually in the next storm and usually toward the heaviest thing below it. The other pine killer here is lightning; Polk County led the nation in strikes in 2025, and a struck pine can die in a week or stand for a year before it fails. We assess struck pines and tell you honestly which kind you have.

What's included

Beetle identification

Pitch tubes, frass and needle color tell us whether beetles are active, gone, or never there.

Priority removal of active trees

Pines with beetles still inside come down first, before the brood emerges and spreads.

Dead-pine removal

Gray, dried pines taken down in sections; brittle wood handled with the extra care it needs.

Lightning assessment

Struck pines evaluated for survival and for the beetles that follow a strike.

Crane when needed

Tall pines over pool cages and roofs lifted out; see crane work.

Protecting the neighbors

Advice on watering and avoiding root damage for the pines you keep; nearby pines checked for pitch tubes.

Questions we get about pine removal

Can a beetle-attacked pine be saved?

Rarely, and not once the needles change color. A vigorous pine with a few pitch tubes that's being watered through a drought can sometimes pitch the beetles out. One with fading needles is done. We'll tell you which, and we won't sell you a spray that won't work.

Will the beetles spread to my other pines?

Ips beetles fly to the nearest stressed pine when they emerge, which is why removing an infested tree quickly matters and why the healthy pines nearby should be watered in a drought and protected from root damage.

How long will a dead pine stand?

A year or two, sometimes less. The roots go first. The problem is that it doesn't choose a calm day to fall.

My pine was hit by lightning but looks fine.

Give it a season and watch for pitch tubes and fading needles — lightning-struck pines are beetle magnets. If the strike spiraled bark off the trunk, the tree is likely to die; if it's a single scar, it may live. See the lightning guide.

Is a dead pine covered by insurance?

Removing a standing dead tree is maintenance, not a claim. A dead pine that falls on the house is a covered loss — which is the argument for taking it down first.
